The popular erectile dysfunction drug Cialis, sold under the brand name Levitra, is being sued by the Food and Drug Administration for failing to warn consumers about the risk of sudden and unexpected erections when taken by men with an enlarged prostate.
A spokesman for the Food and Drug Administration said the drug’s label was based on a “probable cause” analysis of nearly a billion cases each year, but the agency has yet to produce a final response. The drug is being sued because it does not contain a similar ingredient found in the prescription drugs Viagra and Cialis, as well as the erectile dysfunction drug Viagra’s active ingredient, tadalafil.
Cialis was the second of the drug’s class of drugs to be pulled in the first half of last year, with Levitra losing FDA approval. The drug was introduced in the United States in 2003 and was approved for sale by the FDA in June 2016. Its active ingredient, tadalafil, is the same drug as Levitra.
Cialis’ label is available on the manufacturer’s website,. But the drug has also been rejected by the FDA for failing to contain enough of the drug’s active ingredient, a chemical called sildenafil, in the drug’s chemical structure.
“Cialis is not a safe drug,” FDA spokesman David Auerbach said in an e-mailed statement.
According to the Associated Press, Cialis was taken by more than 1,300 men who were taking nitrates used to treat angina or chest pain or other heart conditions, and about 8,000 who had taken Viagra or similar drugs for angina. Viagra, Cialis and Levitra were all prescribed to about 1,200 people.
In a letter posted on the company’s website to the FDA, the company said that its product information was “clearly and completely accurate and scientifically sound.” The agency did not provide an explanation for the errors, but it said the drug was safe to take.
Auerbach said Cialis and Viagra are similar to some other drugs that have been linked to heart attacks, and the agency did not think that there was enough information on the possible link to heart attacks to justify recommending such drugs.
“This is not a new development. The FDA has long known that nitrates and certain other drugs increase the risk for heart attack and stroke. These are serious and sometimes fatal cardiovascular events,” said Mark Auerbach, spokesman for the American Heart Association. “We are concerned that the drug makers, in the hopes that they will be able to develop more effective and safer alternatives, are not doing enough to warn patients.”
Cialis is a prescription drug that is the subject of lawsuits in the U. S. and Europe by men who were taking nitrates or other drugs that were not prescribed because they caused heart attacks, strokes or other heart-related problems. The lawsuits were consolidated in November in U. District Court in Boston.
The drug maker says the company was aware of the possibility that nitrates may cause heart attacks, strokes or other serious health problems.
Cialis’ label was not released until November, though Pfizer, the maker of Viagra, said it was aware of the connection.
Auerbach said the agency will make a final response next month.
